Mission and Goals:

The mission of the Spanish Department is to provide students with a solid foundation in the Spanish language, literature, and culture. Through an immersive and rigorous curriculum, we strive to cultivate linguistic proficiency and cultural awareness in a diverse and interconnected world. Our goal is to prepare students with a minor in Spanish to communicate effectively, critically engage with Spanish-speaking cultures, and apply their skills in both personal and professional contexts.

Departmental AwardsAnnually, the Department of Spanish Studies recognizes exceptional students in elementary and intermediate language courses during the university-wide awards ceremony. At this event, the Gertrude Looney Scholarship is awarded to the top junior language student, and the Elizabeth Myatt Award is presented to the outstanding senior language student. These prestigious awards honor academic excellence and dedication to the study of the Spanish language.
